Hi Bernd, this is an interesting question and one I have never tried. I would think that Monkey Puzzle seeds do NOT need daylight to germinate as quite often in forests the seeds would be covered by leaves etc. Now you raise this question I will try it, I have some seeds here that have just been delivered and I will try half of them in daylight and half of them in darkness and will report back my findings.

Hi James, we have bought seeds through Diabigboots … they are soaking in water for 2 days and now we want to plant them on. We do not have a heated propagator and are not sure about the place where we locate the tray/pots. Either at the window or in the room of the heating of the house, where it is warmer but without any light. Do you think they would germinate without light? Hi Geoff, there is no such thing as a silly question! The answer is the pointed end goes into the soil leaving the tail and most of the seed on view.

hi i am totally new to this when ur seeds are ready for seed tray after soaking which side down do they go into the dirt? i feel daft asking this question but i just want to get it right.many thanks.

Hi. I’ve been searching for seed myself for a few years, and today, I actually found some. But my DK/RHS book on propagating plants doesn’t give much info. Thanks for your detailed advice on growing these interesting trees from seed. I’ll let you know how I get on. Rob (UK)

That IS an impressive greenhouse – and yes, we did get ours from the same (orange) place. I just hope ours one day looks half as good (and half as big!) as yours!

Hi Michelle, many thanks for the question. I have never fed my trees anything, however I feel that they get all the food they need from the soil so I always use quality soil, I use John Innes Number 2. I have all of mine in pots and I replace the top couple of inches of soil every 2 years so that they have some fresh soil, I also repot them every 3 to 4 years and add lots of new soil when I do it.

Hi i was just wondering do you feed these trees with anything? I bought a load of seeds and planted them as you suggest, fingers crossed! I love them hope some seedlings appear!

Hi Jenny, an unheated greenhouse over winter would be perfect for these, thats what I do for the first winter and then I bring them out for all future winters……good luck

I am about to sow the seeds according to your method.
